Back To School First Day Activity Idea

Hi there!  I have been slacking on the blogging lately.  When summer started I was upset that I was not going to be teaching summer school, and that I had to drop out of Grad School for a while (Due to some REALLY ridiculous issues at a different school not allowing my transcripts to get set over...Long story really.), but I have actually been INCREDIBLY busy this whole summer.

I wanted to do a quick share for an activity that you can do on the first day of school and how I used it last year! (I wish I had pictures!!! That is going to be one of my goals this upcoming school year is to take more pictures in my room, of my products.  I think it is actually going to become a classroom job!!!)

So here it is
I posted this last year about this time but it works so well.  I have it as a freebie in my TPT store. You can click the picture or HERE to download.

This is what I did last year and will do again this year on the first day of school.  I took pictures of all of my students on the first day, printed them on regular typing paper, and then let the students glue them on the next day.  I then took the pages and made a classbook! Students were able to check out the book to get to know their classmates.  I also created one of me for each of my classes so the kids could learn a little bit about me.  I also created a HUGE one of these (anchor chart sized) and had it posted up on the first day of school for kids to see when they walked in!

For me I teach 6th grade.  The school is new and you are merged with 5 elementary schools.  That merge is tough.  You might not know ANYONE in your class.  This is a fun way to get to know your table mates and classmates AND your teacher.  I also liked the idea of letting students check out the book.  The book worked really well for new students through out the year too!

Mostly though, it was just a nice reminder for me of my kids, as I have a ton of them.  Helps remind me that they are little people who have feelings, and favorites too!

What are you doing on the first day of school?

Cheers,

  2. I can see that book being a popular choice during independent work time. We had a "Scopebook" in college that listed people's pictures and on-campus numbers, and we stalked it ALL THE TIME!
